The objects that I create are rooted in the use of alternative materials and clean, modern designs which are influenced by nature. My approach to design dwells on the paradox of memory and progress implicit in modernism. From my vantage point in a post-modern age I evoke memories of late modern design through my use of materials, form and colour. These ‘one of a kind’ pieces express the postmodern zeitgeist of our age by focusing on modernism in a subjective and relativistic way.
As a designer, I enjoy working with the contrast that can be created between material and form. I choose to work with modern industrial materials in contrast with natural forms. I work with the end scraps of industrial materials. I purchase the scrap ends of these pieces that would normally end up in landfills as waste. I alter the surface of these rough industrial materials into smooth natural forms that are seductive against the skin. This transcendence reflects the spirit of our age.
